A Study of the Exegetical Method of Imam Al-Jassas(May Allah Have Mercy on Him)

چکیده

Almighty Allah revealed the Noble Qur’an for the guidance and the spiritual and physical healing of humankind, and appointed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as the first interpreter and explainer of its meanings. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) transmitted Qur’anic interpretation from him and from one another; likewise, the Successors narrated from the Companions and from one another, and the followers of the Successors narrated from them in turn. This constitutes the first stage in the history of Qur’anic exegesis. The second stage emerged after the era of the Companions and the Successors, during the period of ḥadīth compilation, in which various chapters were devoted to different subjects—one of which was Qur’anic exegesis. At that time, the Qur’an was not authored in a separate, verse-by-verse and sūrah-by-sūrah manner from beginning to end. In the third stage, Qur’anic exegesis developed as an independent discipline distinct from ḥadīth, in which the Qur’an was interpreted in accordance with the arrangement of the muṣḥaf, sūrah by sūrah and verse by verse, with each exegete employing his own distinct methodology and approach. The aim of this article is to elucidate the exegetical method of Aḥkām al-Qur’ān by Imām al-Jaṣṣāṣ (may Allah have mercy on him) and to outline his contributions to Qur’anic interpretation. The methodology adopted in preparing this study is analytical and descriptive, based on library research. The central question addressed is the precision and depth of Imām al-Jaṣṣāṣ in exegesis, his defense of the Ḥanafī school, and his engagement with opposing views. The findings of this research demonstrate that Imām al-Jaṣṣāṣ examined juristic issues extensively in the light of Qur’anic verses, responded to the arguments of opponents of the Ḥanafī school through various lines of reasoning, and, in some cases, employed strong language when addressing the opinions of Imām al-Shāfiʿī (may Allah have mercy on him). In my view, the primary reason for this lies in his scholarly confidence, the strength of his evidence, and his conviction in the correctness of the views of Imām Abū Ḥanīfah (may Allah have mercy on him).
