An Examination of the Causes of Oppression in the Light of the Holy Qur’an

Oppression is among the most serious individual and social harms, and the Holy Qur’an has extensively addressed its dimensions, causes, and consequences. The expansion of various manifestations of oppression in human societies highlights the necessity of examining its roots and contributing factors from the perspective of the Holy Qur’an. The main issue of this research is to identify the causes and contexts of the emergence of oppression and its continuation in human society based on Qur’anic teachings. The aim of this study is to elucidate the most important doctrinal, moral, and social factors of oppression and to demonstrate the role of the Holy Qur’an in raising awareness and preventing it. In terms of purpose, this research is fundamental, and in terms of method, it is descriptive–analytical. The data have been collected through a library-based approach and by analyzing the verses of the Holy Qur’an. The findings of the research indicate that factors such as disbelief and polytheism, following one’s base desires, ignorance, arrogance, weakness of faith, and social injustice are among the most important causes of the emergence of oppression from the Qur’anic perspective. Moreover, by emphasizing justice, piety, and responsibility, the Holy Qur’an presents fundamental solutions for confronting oppression and realizing a just society.
