Causes of Earthquakes from an Islamic Perspective

Earthquakes, as a natural phenomenon, refer to the slipping and shaking of the earth and have always attracted human attention. This attention arises from the destructive effects of earthquakes and the damages they can cause. The purpose of this research is to examine two different perspectives on the causes of earthquakes: one from an Islamic viewpoint and the other from the perspective of earth sciences. In the Islamic view, earthquakes are seen as signs of God’s anger, emphasizing the importance of repentance and reforming human behaviors. In contrast, geologists believe that earthquakes are caused by natural and scientific factors, such as the sudden release of gases and pressures within the earth, and have no relation to human actions. The methodology of this study involves analyzing and describing the content of religious and scientific texts using library resources. The findings indicate that these two perspectives are not only not in conflict with one another but can also be considered complementary parts of a larger truth. Therefore, understanding both the natural and religious aspects simultaneously can enhance our understanding of the earthquake phenomenon. Ultimately, this study concludes that both the natural and religious dimensions should be considered in understanding the causes of earthquakes, and neither perspective should be completely dismissed. Recognizing that earthquakes can occur for both natural and religious reasons can help us better understand this phenomenon.
