The Role of Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam in the Formation and Development of Islamic Sciences

In the history of Islamic sciences, particularly in the fields of Hadith, Qur’anic exegesis (Tafsir), and asceticism (Zuhd), a number of distinguished scholars played a decisive role in shaping the intellectual heritage of the Muslim community through their scholarly and educational contributions. Among them, Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam al-Harawi stands out as one of the prominent scholars of Khurasan, occupying a distinguished position among Muslim scholars and jurists. Examining his life and scholarly legacy can contribute to a deeper understanding of the intellectual developments of his era. This study aims to elucidate the scholarly status of Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam al-Harawi, investigate his role in the development of Islamic sciences, and analyze his influence on the intellectual and educational currents of his time. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected from authoritative historical, Hadith, and biographical sources and subsequently analyzed through a critical and analytical approach. The findings indicate that Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam al-Harawi, owing to his eminent scholarly standing, played a significant role in the transmission and narration of Hadith, the education of students, and the promotion of the values of asceticism and piety. Furthermore, his contributions extended beyond the field of Hadith to areas such as Islamic economics and other religious sciences. The study concludes that Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam al-Harawi was one of the most influential scholarly figures of historical Khurasan, encompassing parts of present-day Afghanistan, whose intellectual legacy deserves greater attention in contemporary Islamic studies. A comprehensive examination of his works and ideas can enrich modern scholarship on the development of Islamic thought and civilization.
