Abstract
This study aims to examine the role and significance of Afghanistan’s hot and mineral springs in the development of the country’s health tourism sector. The research is applied in purpose and descriptive–analytical in nature and methodology. The required data and documents were collected through both library and field research methods. The statistical population consists of faculty members and students from the Faculty of Engineering at Badakhshan University. Using Cochran’s formula, the sample size was determined to be 106 participants. Data were analyzed using Excel software, and the SWOT model (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) was applied to identify strategies and solutions for promoting hot and mineral spring tourism. The findings reveal that the unique therapeutic properties of these springs—linked to their geochemical diversity, serene and green environments, convenient accessibility, and potential for infrastructural and tourism service development—are among their major advantages. The therapeutic effects of hot and mineral springs have a substantial impact on attracting local tourists. However, several challenges hinder the growth of this tourism sector, including weak infrastructure, lack of attention to the tourism potential of these springs, risks of environmental degradation due to overcrowding, shortage of trained specialists and staff, insufficient public awareness about the springs’ healing properties, and inadequate utilization of available resources. Furthermore, domestic and international promotion of these natural assets remains limited, and medical and on-site facilities in most spring areas are not satisfactory. If these challenges are effectively addressed through strategic planning and sustainable management, Afghanistan’s hot and mineral springs could play a significant role in attracting tourists and enhancing local community participation in the tourism economy.
