 Abstract
The Islamic conquests beyond the borders of Arabia began during the
era of the Rashidun Caliphs and continued in subsequent periods with
evolving objectives. The purpose of this article is to examine the military
and political strategies of Musa ibn Nusayr in Africa and Al-Andalus, as
well as his role in expanding the frontiers of Islam across the seas,
highlighting his wise and courageous leadership. This research adopts a
library-based method, gathering information from reliable and authentic
historical sources, followed by analysis. The findings indicate that the
Umayyad state, through a combination of hard and soft power strategies,
succeeded in extending the Islamic territories to vast lands, thereby
expanding the influence and authority of Islamic governance. This
expansion stretched from the middle of East Asia to the Atlantic Ocean in
the west. The foundation of this policy began with the founder of the
Umayyad dynasty, Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and
continued under his successors, reaching its peak during the reign of the
sixth Umayyad Caliph, al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik (86-96 AH). The
conquest of North Africa and Al-Andalus stands as one of the most
significant events in the history of the first Islamic century, fostering the
integration and connection of Europe, Africa, and Asia over the course of
800 years. In this context, the roles of Musa ibn Nusayr and his skilled
commander, Tariq ibn Ziyad, should not be overlooked. Musa was one of
the most astute commanders of the first Islamic century. Although the
circumstances of these conquests ultimately favored Musa ibn Nusayr, his
skill and insight cannot be denied.
