Abstract
This article examines the role of the Geographic Information System (GIS) in the exploration of mineral resources in Badakhshan province. Located in northeastern Afghanistan, Badakhshan is known for its rich mineral resources, including lapis lazuli, gold, and precious metals. This research highlights the significance of GIS as an advanced tool for managing and analyzing geographical data, which can enhance the accuracy and efficiency of exploration processes. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of GIS on identifying mineral resources, reducing costs and time, and proposing solutions to the challenges associated with using this technology in Badakhshan. The research methodology involved collecting data from library sources, analyzing findings, and studying successful global examples. The results indicate that GIS, with its unique capabilities such as precise spatial analysis, integrated data management, and 3D modeling, is an effective tool for optimizing mineral exploration. This technology can address challenges like the lack of up-to-date data, weak technical infrastructure, and a shortage of local experts. Additionally, GIS contributes to improved planning, reduced environmental impacts, and increased productivity. Finally, the study emphasizes the need for investment in strengthening technological infrastructure, training human resources, and enhancing coordination among relevant agencies.
The adoption and utilization of GIS can play a crucial role in the sustainable development of the mining industry and the economic growth of Badakhshan.
