Abstract

Diplomatic etiquette and protocols in international negotiations, as one of the universally accepted principles, reflect the rich culture, refined civilization, and national customs of every country. Considering that the contemporary world is moving along the path of economic and industrial development as well as an information and technological revolution, negotiations among states play a fundamental role in shaping and advancing this trajectory. A historical review of international relations indicates that such relations have always undergone transformations and evolved in accordance with the changing conditions of human life. The main objective of this study is to explain and provide a clear depiction of how etiquette and protocols are observed in both formal and informal international interactions. The research method employed in this paper is descriptive–analytical, based on extensive library and documentary studies. The findings of the research reveal that the expansion of relations among countries and the growing level of engagement with the global community necessitate that diplomatic officials, with a thorough understanding of the governing principles of international relations—particularly in foreign affairs—adhere precisely to international norms and protocols. The conclusion of this study demonstrates that diplomatic etiquette and protocols are the outcome of a long historical process of interaction and mutual cooperation among individuals, tribes, societies, and nations throughout the centuries. Gradually, these practices evolved into recognized and customary standards in the relations among states and international organizations. Furthermore, each country, in accordance with its own culture, beliefs, and national values, has introduced certain modifications in the manner of implementing these protocols.
