The Impact of Youth Migration on Family Structure in Faizabad City, Badakhshan Province: A Qualitative Approach Based on Systems Theory and the New Economics of Labor Migration

This study aims to identify and analyze the impact of international youth migration on the transformation and reorganization of family structures in Faizabad City. This phenomenon transcends mere demographic displacement, fundamentally destabilizing intra-familial dynamics. Focusing on Faizabad City as the study population, this research investigates these transformations utilizing an interpretative phenomenological approach, grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Niklas Luhmann's social systems theory and the New Economics of Labor Migration (NELM). Findings derived from the study of 25 families across various neighborhoods of Faizabad indicate that migration has catalyzed a fundamental reorganization of familial roles. This includes the inversion of household headship in 80% of the families and the transition of internal household managers into economic agents in 85% of the cases. Although financial remittances account for 85% of the income for these families-providing short-term financial security-they simultaneously engender structural dependency and exacerbate conflicts. A systemic analysis reveals that these families are experiencing a state of unstable reorganization, characterized by diminished self-regulation and increased disorder.
