The Role of Mineral Resources in sustainable development; A Case Study of Badakhshan Province

Abstract
The mining and related disciplines play an important role in economic and social components of sustainable development by generating employment and wealth. However, in regard to the environmental component there are a few criticisms. Also, by taking the growth in demand for mineral resources into account the mining industry is facing some challenges, e.g., minerals and metals recycling, conservation of environment and the social related issues. In developing countries, especially Afghanistan, which has rich mineral resources, if the components of sustainable development are not paid attention to in mining activities, it will not only not lead to progress but also cause social and economic backwardness. In this research, sustainable development has been examined from a theoretical perspective and secondly, it has been analyzed using a questionnaire. On the other hand, due to the fact that Badakhshan University is made up of students from 34 provinces of Afghanistan and also due to the abundance of minerals in the statistical community, Badakhshan University was chosen for this reason and the questionnaire was distributed to 120 students of Badakhshan University and then After entering the questionnaire data in the Excel program, the results have been analyzed. Based on the findings of the research, the level of students' awareness of the process of mining contracts, the amount and how to use the proceeds, people's access to mining contracts, how to extract mines, the environmental effects of mines, the role of mining activities in the sustainable development of villages and districts, and the sense of ownership of mines are other main concerns of the community. The number of participants in this research is incredibly low. To continue its role, mineral resources and mining industry in Afghanistan need proper management, formulation of laws and policies according to global standards, environmental protection and labor training.
